SHAPE visits Cambodia for 2019 Immersion Experience

At SHAPE, we believe in providing opportunities and building a better future for all people. This February, six enthusiastic SHAPIANs took part in a 10-day cultural immersion experience in Cambodia to support our charity partner SeeBeyondBorders. We have partnered with SeeBeyondBorders for the past six years, and through Community Golf Days, raised close to $700,000.

Cambodia is a country still recovering from the destruction of its education system under the Khmer Rouge, and SeeBeyondBorders works closely with primary schools to improve education standards and provide access to quality teaching. The work they do includes training teachers, assisting with getting children back to school and developing better learning environments.

SHAPIANs who have supported the fundraising efforts were given the opportunity to volunteer with SeeBeyondBorders to gain first-hand experience and make a difference to the lives of Cambodian children. Working in an average temperature of 32 degrees, our team got their hands dirty helping with what we do best; building better spaces. We worked in collaboration with SeeBeyondBorders to help create an inspiring learning environment for both teachers and students. Our work included building new classrooms, and alongside local teachers, assisting student’s learning. Our team also had the privilege of joining in on recreational sport activities with the local children.

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the Immersion Experience. A group of us went to Cambodia and we were able to contribute from day one. Whilst the experience is highly satisfying by being immersed in the culture and way of life, all the funds SHAPE raised, we were able to put our print and see the difference we made.” – Mel Kuroz, Talent Acquisition Partner.

We are proud to participate in this national Community+ initiative and to date, close to 30 SHAPE employees have had the opportunity to experience this life-changing immersion. This year, we also welcomed a team from our UK sister company BW along on our annual trip.

We believe that giving back to the community is a great way to build job satisfaction, create shared experiences and foster relationships – all while having fun!

“The SeeBeyondBorders program was life-changing. A place that has been devastated by war has hope with the help of Ed and his team. This life-changing adventure helps you grow and learn so much about yourself. Would do it again in a heartbeat” – Jennifer Seige
